I have been working hard over the past couple of months and haven’t been able to keep up with my TV shows. One of the shows I like is Nashville so I started watching episodes back to back to catch up. There is a lot of drama, much of which I don’t care about, but there are great songs and many storylines of redemption that both entertain and encourage. On the season finale a song was played and it touched me so deeply I became really emotional and I couldn’t figure out why. It’s called “It’s not Yours to Throw Away” and the line that got me was: What if your just a vessel and God gave you something special? It ain’t yours to throw away.
I thought of all the times that I have not spoken the words that could help someone because I didn’t want to be too Christian or preachy or know it all or I just thought I didn’t have “it” whatever “it” was at the time, enough wisdom, enough credibility, enough love, enough pain, enough energy, and I struggled to be someone for God and for me and for my family. In the end, I decided I was just not good enough and I threw it away.
So what if God gave me something special?
What if He gave you something special?
What if He did and it isn’t ours to throw away or delay or decide whether it is good enough even when we didn’t get the job, no one came to the event, someone made fun of us, or we didn’t feel worthy? What if it is good enough for Him and that is the only standard we really have?
What if you have the words to change a life? What if the phone call you are uncomfortable making could change everything? What if you really can sing? What if you are good enough to be CEO right now? What if you are a vessel that has been filled with divine power that can change a moment, a day, a life, the world, right where you are, being who you are, because you are special?
Don’t throw it away, even if you see yourself as awkward, powerless, ineffective, or worry that you don’t matter. Because you do matter, you are powerful beyond measure and the effect you could have on the world is infinite.
What if you’re just a vessel and God gave you something special but it looked like pain, looked like not being chosen, looked like an epic fail, but it isn’t really. Instead, it is something special that will inspire others to overcome, it will change a perspective, motivate change, stop someone else from feeling like they’re nothing special. You see it ain’t yours to throw away. It is yours to give.
I have struggled for the last couple of weeks with the what are you thinking, Darlene speech. You are not good enough, you never went to bible college, you don’t even go to church these days, but you are supposed to share your thoughts on God? Who do you think you are? Now I am thinking that maybe I am a vessel, a new wineskin and God has filled it up with something different for those who are tired of hearing scriptures they don’t understand and don’t see the relevance of anymore or have a jaded perspective on religion as a whole. Maybe they need to hear things a little differently about a God who loves without any contract or doctrine. That is not mine to throw away.
And, what if you are special just being a mom to your kid that no one else gets but you? Maybe you’re special being the best teacher even though no one ever notices you doing the extras to ensure every child in your class knows they matter. Maybe you’re special taking care of your parents. Nobody says thank you, yet you know you are making their last years the best. Maybe you are special working the checkout at Target and you turn people in your line from busy and cranky to laughing and light just for a moment. Maybe you paint or draw or write and you see the effect it as on others. You have something special. That is not yours to throw away.
What if you’re just a vessel and God gave you something special?
It ain’t yours to throw away.
So, go be YOU!
