How many of us have begrudgingly done something we are supposed to do? We don’t really like our neighbor but we bring their recycle boxes up anyways, mumbling and grumbling the whole way. We don’t feel like watching our best friend’s children but we owe them one. We don’t want to go to work, but we do, and, everyone knows we are NOT happy. Each day is filled with don’t want to’s and it is making us miserable.
I have a piece of advice for you…STOP!
Stop doing things for other people you don’t want to do and then complain to your spouse for a week about it. Stop giving money to people and then rant about how it doesn’t ever do any good. Stop being “good” and then feeling bad about it.
Because, what is the point?
If you can’t do something joyfully, do nothing. Yes, that is right, I said DO NOTHING!!!!
Have you ever had one of your children do their chores griping and complaining to the point that you just want to say, “Forget it. Go to your room. It is not worth it for you to do this and me listen to you.”
So, how do you think God feels?
How many times have we done things because it is the Christian thing to do and griped and complained for days after? Don’t you think God might be feeling a little like forget about it?
In Corinthians it says that God loves a cheerful giver. In Psalms it says serve the Lord with gladness. It does not say he loves someone who is keeping record of whose turn it is, someone who does things grudgingly, someone who lets everyone know they are “suffering” for the benefit of another.
If you don’t want to, don’t.
If you want to make a difference, want to be the light where there is darkness, then go out there and do what needs to be done with no expectation of a thank you, acknowledgment of a job well done or even a smile. Do it because, even if you can’t see it, you sent out a ripple. You sent out this love wave. And, it touches people. It touches people in a way you may never understand. And, it may create other ripples as those touched with yours send their own little love waves out into the world inspired by your kindness and your lack of agenda.
Have you ever did a random act of kindness where the person never knew who you were? Do you remember that feeling?
That is what life is supposed to be like. It is supposed to be about random acts, lack of expectations and joyfully giving. That is what changes us. That is what changes you.
Give up begrudging.
Instead be happy.
Even if you are the only one who knows why.
