I have a personal mission in life to always leave people better off than how I found them, even if they are terrible drivers, have 16 items in the express lane and then pay counting out dimes and nickels or they have no idea of the concept of customer service.
I leave people better off because that is what we are supposed to do. You know, the love your neighbor as yourself that we can talk about, but have difficulty executing. It is so much easier to grumble and blame and be frustrated.
My daughter and I went shopping on Friday. When we were ready to check out, the cashier was miserable. I don’t know if she was having a bad day or a bad life. It did not matter. She was obviously, I mean obviously, not happy.
Now I could have quietly cashed out and then complained about her behind her back on the way out the door. I could have sighed, hoping she would notice that she was being rude. I could have been snarky back, as I am the customer. But, there was that motto of mine. Leave her better off.
So, I looked for a way to brighten her day.
I noticed her ring. It was unique and beautiful. So, I told her how much I liked it and why.
In an instant, there was a total transformation. She perked up, smiled and her energy shifted completely from darkness to light. By the end of the transaction, she was almost giddy with us. It was amazing. All it took was a little compliment. A moment from me to say something nice to her.
I am not sure if I made her minute, her day or her week. It didn’t matter. I left her better off than how I found her.
Can you imagine a world where everyone was on a mission to make every life they came across, stranger, family, friend, co-worker, better than how they found it?
Thinking about it almost makes me giddy.
I dare you to try it yourself!
