Tomorrow I start my food challenge, Live Below the Line, to raise funds for the World Food Program. I get a $1.50/day to buy food.
What was I thinking?
Today I went grocery shopping. It didn’t take me long. Well, there was a math delay trying to find the right combination that added up to $7.50, the five-day challenge total. Can I buy one banana or two? That is what it came down to.
I can do anything for five days. But, what if I had to feed my family like this? As a mom, I would be devastated that I had to chose between protein and vegetables and fruit. In fact, I sacrificed a little protein for some flavor (hence the coconut milk and pineapple) but I know I would never do that if I had young children.
Why have I not been more grateful for apples, broccoli, salad? Why did I not savor the steak I had last night? Because I know that after these five days are up I will have an opportunity to have those again.
So many do not know that luxury. 1.4 billion in the world eat every day on $1.50.
That is staggering.
With a “b”.
For me, I have not even started and I feel ashamed of my wasted food, of my neglect of my fellow man, of my ingratitude for the plentiful food we have.
That ends today.
$1.50 a day for food….what was I thinking?
I was thinking, I am one of the lucky ones.
